About the Convention

The 2019 National Garden Railway Convention will be held August 27-31, 2019 in Portland, Oregon. The convention will be held at the Double Tree Hotel in downtown Portland.  With easy access to freeways and the MAX light rail, the centrally located Double Tree offers top-rate accommodations for the best convention experience. On-line website registration will open on August 30, 2018. We will offer a short ride behind the SP Daylight 4449 steam engine to our BBQ at Oaks Park on the  Willamette River. We will be selling 18 one-way cab rides in 4449 for the short, two mile ride. Cab rides will sell out quickly, so plan to register early.

We are expecting about 35 layouts to be on tour Tuesday through Saturday. The Wednesday layout tour will take people into the beautiful Columbia River Gorge past the 620' Multnomah Falls, the second highest waterfall in the USA and the most visited place in Oregon. There will be two days of pre-convention tour lay-outs open in Seattle and two or three days of post-convention tour layouts in Southern Oregon. Post-convention stops include Train Mountain and layouts in Northern California.

Besides the vendor hall, clinics, ice cream social, barbecue and banquet, several unusual convention events are in the works.  Attendees can participate in multiple concurrent ops sessions, using waybills and a dispatcher, on Tuesday afternoon/evening. On Monday and Tuesday nights we will be offering a 6-mile trolley ride from Lake Oswego to the Old Spaghetti Factory located on the Willamette River in Portland's South Water Front District. Following a layover for dinner, the trolley will return diners to Lake Oswego. Seating will be limited, first come, first served. Don't delay in signing up. Saturday night, Staver Locomotive, a huge, nationally known, live-steam and battery-operated lay-out will be open for touring and running your own train. (The Convention banquet is Friday night.)

The convention has been moved to the last week in August, so there is no longer a conflict with the National Narrow Gauge Convention in Sacramento being held the first week in September, 2019.  We are working with the planners of the NNGC, and some layouts in their pre-convention tour are expected to be included in our post-convention tour.

See you in Portland in 2019.
